A clear site structure: the foundation of your website

A good site architecture will lift your rankings, allowing small/medium businesses to compete with big brands online. If you are interested in organizing your site structure read on!

Greater success through better site structure

Whether you want to create a new site or have an existing one, a good site structure can make a world of difference to your online-business business. Example, a well-structured, low DR site in a competitive niche.

What it's all about

A cluttered website structure can be incredibly confusing for both users and search engines.

Google advises website owners to set up a website with a clear structure in terms of navigation and page structure. Site structure shows Google which pages are most important. Here's how to create an ideal site structure: 4 3 3.

Website structure

Website structure is the structure you use to organise your website. Structure refers to the website hierarchy of pages, categories, and sections and how users and search crawlers navigate between your pages.

1. Optimal crawl accessibility

The main reason why you should pay attention to the website structure is to improve your ranking in Google.

But the question is: "How does a website structure ensure higher rankings?".

First of all, a good site structure and internal links help the search engine crawlers find and index the pages.

Good website structure helps crawlers find your individual pages

If your pages are not properly linked, it's harder for crawlers to find them and get you more organic traffic.

Non-linked pages are more difficult to crawl, index and rank.

But a good website structure is not just about indexability. After all, an XML sitemap can easily fill the gap here. A good website architecture gives context to search engines so they understand what your page is about in the grand scheme of your entire website.

Example: Sports website

Suppose you have a sports website, and one of your pages is about the best maintenance for bikes. You could link from your homepage to all your pages, but because your site is quite large, you would end up with thousands of links on your homepage - which will be confusing for both search engines and users.

Instead, the best way to tackle this is to break down your top-level subject by sport.

After each sport, you can have another level of category pages that break down the topic to objects used in that sport.

Below the material zone is where our "best maintenance for bikes" page would fit.

Google then understands EXACTLY how your web pages fit into the topic by looking at what the parent category pages are about.

2. Improve authority flow and indexing

The advantage of a well-structured website architecture is also that the pagerank is better distributed across the whole website.

This means that just by giving a page internal links in a logical and contextual way, the PageRank of the external links will flow to all related pages and help them rank higher in Google.

This has been applied perfectly to the website.

On their homepage, they emphasise the four main areas in which they specialise:

When you click on support, the first thing you see is a search bar. Basic idea is choice page where the visitor can choose between different types of information. That is, every page between the support page and a detail page.

Other names for a selection page:

  • Category page
  • Category page
  • Overview page
  • Doormat page

What is the purpose of a choice page?
To get the visitor to his destination as quickly as possible. As you hopefully know, every surfer visits your website with a certain goal in mind (on commercial sites, of course, you try to influence the choice).

When you click on support, you are taken to an article that is focused on that keyword, but with top navigation to the lower level. This logical internal linking, maximises the authority flow to the individual pages.

This may explain why this individual page gets more than 3,000 organic traffic, according to Semrush (that's a lot!).

3. Improve user experience

And finally, a logical information architecture and website layout make your site easier to navigate for the user. This makes them more likely to explore, convert, recommend and all those other good things that come with a great user experience.

Whether you want to create a new site or have an existing one, a good site structure can make a world of difference to your online business.

Website structure does not have to be complicated. You just need to set up a hierarchical website structure and stick to it as you expand. This will make it easier for both users and search engine crawlers to understand and navigate the website.

How to get a top website structure

Plan your website structure, don't just create pages when you need them. All important pages should be within 4 clicks of your homepage. Create custom content hubs. Use internal links as much as possible if it fits in the context.
