My name is Tiemen. I study Creative Writing at ArtEZ in Arnhem and Philosophy at Radboud University in Nijmegen. I started writing and filmmaking in high school. At that time I wrote a lot of poems and together with some friends I regularly made short films. That's where my interest in storytelling started. In my philosophy course I learn to postpone judgments by questioning: things are often different at the core than on the surface. At Creative Writing I learn all about storytelling: storytelling is nothing more than giving the right information at the right time.
The combination of my two studies means that my work often has an analytical angle. I am inquisitive and curious. In my work, I scrutinize myself and the world around me. I'm interested in the choices people make, why they make those choices and what the cost or benefit is.
I am currently working at Volkskrant as a podcast creator and I am in my graduating year of Creative Writing. I'm doing an artistic research project on stories that merge journalism and literature. My graduation work is going to be a short story collection on the theme of violence. I will graduate in July 2023.
